Queensland Teacher Champions Student Wellbeing Through Mentorship

2 min read

A career spanning the Queensland school system has cemented for teacher Kym Staley-Biggs the importance of fostering individual wellbeing for students.

Throughout her teaching career, including her work in learning and literacy support, Kym has worked closely with students on the brink of disengaging from school.

More recently, she has become involved with the Inspiring Brighter Futures Foundation, serving as both a mentor and facilitator in the Onwards & Upwards program at Victoria Point State High School.

Kids can easily get lost, and I’ve developed an understanding of just how important it is to look after their wellbeing, particularly for teenagers,” Kym said.

“They’re trying to work out who they are, and they really need cheerleaders in their corner. If they can feel better about themselves, they can then go off and do whatever they want in the world.

Kym began mentoring with the Foundation in 2024 and quickly progressed to facilitating programs this year.

“I wanted to get more involved in wellbeing, and after doing some work with therapy dogs, which I loved, I realised my true leaning was to work more closely with young people,” Kym said. “I discovered the Inspiring Brighter Futures Foundation online and started as a volunteer mentor.

“I strongly believe in giving back to the community, and coming across these programs was very timely for me.

“The programs really resonated, and from what I’ve seen firsthand in schools, building young people’s self-worth and self-esteem is absolutely vital. They can see that they are capable of creating a better future.”

Kym believes the program’s strength lies in the collective efforts of its volunteer mentors to connect with young people and help build their confidence.

“Our mentors are so important. We need people from all walks of life to get involved. Mentors share their own life experiences and give back — and it’s proving to be such a rewarding experience for them.”

Onwards & Upwards is the flagship self-development program of the Inspiring Brighter Futures Foundation, designed to support young people and adults in need.

Delivered over eight weeks in public, private, and flexi schools, the Onwards & Upwards Wellbeing Program takes participants on a personal development and mentoring journey. It encourages them to uncover and embrace their values as individuals while taking a deep dive into wellbeing, motivation, resilience, and accountability.

In 2025, the Inspiring Brighter Futures Foundation will deliver more than 80 programs across Queensland, focusing on three core groups: young people facing challenges, emerging student leaders, and job seekers.
