Kingston State College Celebrates Emerging Leaders at Annual Awards Night

Kingston State College recently hosted its annual awards night to celebrate student achievements and community spirit.

The Inspiring Brighter Futures Foundation was proud to attend and support the presentation of the inaugural Emerging Leaders Award.

This award recognises a Kingston State College student who demonstrates courage, determination, and self-respect — setting an example of leadership within the school community.

This year’s Emerging Leader has overcome challenges, led by example, and inspired others to become the best version of themselves. With guidance from Inspiring Brighter Futures Foundation mentors, the recipient has grown into a role model, encouraging peers to strive for a brighter future.

Inspiring Brighter Futures Foundation CEO and Founder John Godwin presented the inaugural Emerging Leaders Award to Bianca Kendrick from Year 8.

Bianca participated in the Foundation’s Onwards & Upwards program at the school in 2025.

Former Kingston State College students, including Elise Bell and Danita Devi, have returned as mentors for the Foundation’s programs, with Elise now a trained facilitator. These alumni, along with this year’s recipients, exemplify the outstanding emerging leaders who continue to give back to their community.

Another inspiring story comes from Dontae, a participant in this year’s program, who shared his passion for music and looks forward to performing guitar at future alumni and Year 12 awards nights. Dontae connected with his mentor, Rowan Sedgwick, through their shared love of music. A guitar was generously donated by Greg Parker from Flight Centre to support Dontae’s journey.

Mentor Rowan Sedgwick has been involved with the program this year at Kingston State College and has found the program to be mutually rewarding for all involved.

“You can see clearly the benefit of the program through the growth in the young people in that time,” Rowan said.

“It’s a great opportunity for self-reflection, looking at your values and identifying what’s important in life. The mentees are often really grateful just to have an adult figure listen to them and talk with them about life experiences.”

Onwards & Upwards is the flagship self-development program of the Inspiring Brighter Futures Foundation, designed to empower young people and adults in need.

In 2025, the Foundation is delivering more than 80 programs across Queensland, focusing on three core groups: young people facing challenges, emerging student leaders, and job seekers.
