Gold Coast trainer and facilitator Jodi Brown believes a mentoring program being delivered to the region’s youth and long-term unemployed has found the ‘secret sauce’ in terms of core teachings to support those at risk.
Onwards & Upwards is the flagship self-development program from the Inspiring Brighter Futures Foundation created to support young people and adults in need.
Brown says the way the program is put together is making immediate headway in improving connections and acceptance in a non-judgmental, supportive environment.
“The program is vital in getting participants to understand their values, identify their role models, and understand individual thought processes and how they can change their thinking,” Brown said.
“These programs are filling a gap in providing values-based guidance and goal setting through the presence of mentors who are there solely to support and focus on the participants.”
“Personal development is one of my core passions and having five daughters myself, I’m very focused on supporting our youth.”
Brown is a business owner, trainer, and adventurer who has overcome his own struggles with mental health issues and has dedicated himself to helping others through a range of programs in schools and businesses.
“As an alumnus of Miami State High School it was great to be facilitating a program back there where we saw results immediately following the first course,” Brown said. “Kids who have been through the program are now coming back to visit current students and offer encouragement which is amazing to see.”
The school’s program is an eight-week mentoring program that is making a significant difference in the lives of at-risk youth with data showing increased levels of engagement and self-esteem from participants. The jobs program is a structured group training program, conducted over four weeks and delivered to job seekers who have been unemployed for one year or more.
Youth programs have been held on the Gold Coast at Miami State High School, Palm Beach Currumbin SHS, and Nerang SHS and Jobs programs have been conducted at Southport and Coomera.
Inspiring Brighter Futures Foundation founder and CEO John Godwin said the Foundation is actively looking for more mentors and supporters to continue the successful programs in the Gold Coast region.
Over eight weeks, participants in the Onwards & Upwards school program undertake a personal development and mentoring program that uncovers and embraces their values as an individual and takes a deep dive into their wellbeing, motivation, resilience, and accountability.
Attributes mentors work with the students in developing include – outlook on life, motivation to succeed, engagement with school, developing trusting relationships with adults, setting and achieving goals, and positive relationships with peers and teachers.
Onwards & Upwards to a Job is a structured group training program, which includes one-to-one mentoring sessions conducted over four weeks and delivered to job seekers who have been unemployed for one year or more. The ages of participants range from 18 to 65 years.
