An eight-week mentoring program is making a significant difference in the lives of at-risk youth with data showing increased levels of engagement and self-esteem from participants.
Onwards & Upwards is the flagship self-development program from the Inspiring Brighter Futures Foundation created to support young people and adults in need.
The Onwards & Upwards school program results data reveals that participants who were at risk and disengaging from school have continued their improved development three months after the program delivery. The students have seen their engagement in school increase from 50% to 71%; communication one-on-one rise from 54% to 78%; positive outlook on life rise from 50% to 71%; self-esteem and confidence rise from 54% to 73%; and self-image increase from 50% to 72%.
Teachers independent from the Foundation collected the data from their 554 participants who completed the Onwards & Upwards program over three time points – prior to the program, at the end of the program’s eight sessions, and three months after the program completion.
Over 1300 students also undertook their own self-assessment and 89% believe that the program had increased their motivation to succeed in school and life. 86% believe that the program has increased their self-esteem.
Inspiring Brighter Futures Foundation founder and CEO John Godwin said the Foundation is delighted with the results and the increase in engagement and positive outlook demonstrated by participants.
“Young people are facing many challenges and the opportunity to work with a mentor in a structured program is delivering results through these programs.
“The social problems we see every day for young people and those unable to enter the workforce are multi-dimensional.
“Family dysfunction, the rising cost of living, disengagement at school, an increase in social media isolation, use of alcohol and drugs, a lack of employment opportunities in regional Queensland, and a shortage of housing stock mean many people are feeling marginalised.
“With the benefits of one-on-one mentoring, the program works to inspire participants to imagine, plan, and achieve a more satisfying, balanced, and brighter future.
“We are actively looking to expand the program Australia-wide and also would welcome more mentors participating.”
Over eight weeks, participants in the Onwards & Upwards school program undertake a personal development and mentoring program that uncovers and embraces their values as an individual and takes a deep dive into their wellbeing, motivation, resilience, and accountability.
Attributes mentors work with the students in developing include – outlook on life, motivation to succeed, engagement with school, developing trusting relationships with adults, setting and achieving goals, and positive relationships with peers and teachers.
