Imagining a future career can be difficult for many young people if they have never had the opportunity to step inside a professional workplace. Thanks to a partnership between Inspiring Brighter Futures Foundation (IBFF) and Pitcher Partners, a group of aspiring young leaders recently experienced exactly that.
As part of the IBFF community partnership program, students from Brisbane Bayside State College participated in a special “Lunch & Learn” mentoring and industry-exposure experience at the Brisbane office of the business consulting firm Pitcher Partners.
Designed as an express version of the Foundation’s Onwards & Upwards wellbeing mentoring program, the initiative connected high-achieving Business Studies students with professionals working across a range of industries, helping them gain valuable insight into future career pathways while building confidence and aspiration.
Despite the challenging weather on the day, the students arrived excited and eager to learn.
The Pitcher Partners office on the 38th floor immediately captured their attention. For many students, it was their first time seeing the panoramic views across Brisbane. Just as impressive was the professional workplace environment itself, with several students expressing amazement at the scale and energy of the corporate setting.
For some, it was the first time they had stepped inside a major professional services firm. The experience helped transform career ambitions from abstract ideas into tangible possibilities.
Throughout the day, students participated in industry presentations, career pathway discussions, and workplace mentoring opportunities with Pitcher Partners staff. They learned about traineeships, cadetships and graduate pathways, while gaining a deeper understanding of the many opportunities available within professional services.
Students were introduced to a range of operations including Risk, Insurance, Wealth Management, Finance and Corporate Services, broadening their understanding of the diverse careers that exist within modern organisations.
A highlight of the experience was an extensive office tour spanning approximately two-and-a-half levels of the building. Combined with informal networking conversations over lunch, the program created meaningful opportunities for students to engage directly with professionals and ask questions about career journeys, workplace culture and future opportunities.
The impact was felt by both students and mentors alike.

Pitcher Partners staff embraced the opportunity to share their experiences, insights and advice, while feedback indicated that many mentors found the experience equally rewarding.
Conversations throughout the day reinforced the value of connecting young people with professionals who can provide guidance, encouragement, and real-world perspectives.
“At its heart, this program is about helping young people see what’s possible, said Norman Thurecht from Pitcher Partners.
“By exposing students to professional workplaces, creating meaningful mentoring connections and offering first-hand industry insight, we’re helping build confidence and showing that professional careers are both accessible and achievable.
“We’re delighted to offer this experience to these students through Inspiring Brighter Futures and also involve our staff in the power of mentoring.”
The success of the Lunch & Learn program also highlights the potential for similar industry-based mentoring and workplace exposure initiatives across a wide range of sectors, including construction, health, aged care, hairdressing, legal services and other professional industries.
Inspiring Brighter Futures Foundation CEO John Godwin said, “Strong community partnerships play a critical role in helping young people discover pathways they may never have previously considered.
“By connecting students with workplaces, mentors and real-world opportunities, programs like this foster aspiration, belonging and brighter futures.
“Our Foundation is proud to partner with organisations like Pitcher Partners that share a commitment to investing in the next generation and helping young people realise their potential.”
