Tim Franklin takes on an incredible feat – to run the world to Inspire Brighter Futures!
The 26,232 kilometre (16,300 mile) journey will leave Southbank in Brisbane on December 3 with the objective to be arriving back at Southbank within 433 days to break the current world record, which sits at 434 days.
New Zealand will be the first international visit, running from south to north; before arriving in San Francisco on New Year’sEve to run the 9500 kilometres (5903 miles) across America. After finishing in New York City, Tim moves then to South America – including running the Andes, Europe, Asia then Perth before crossing the Nullabor to arrive in Brisbane.
The 39-year-old, who left a corporate role as a lawyer to become a trainer, sports coach and now motivational speaker has been running several hundred kilometres per week in preparation.
He got into running due to topping out at 120 kilograms (264.5 pounds) and being in a sedentary lifestyle. Starting running, he couldn’t muster more than about two kilometres per run!
Only five people in history have completed a run the world challenge like this.
Numerous charities will benefit from Tim’s run including Inspiring Brighter Futures Foundation, Lung Cancer Foundation Australia and Wings for Life.
His commercial team in Australia is approaching sponsors with global focuses to promote their products and inspire staff and customers alike from Tim’s journey when he happens to be in their city hubs.
Managing logistics will be two friends joining him on the adventure – both of who are trained nurses that have quit their jobs to assist Tim throughout his mission and manage logistics from city to city.
A support vehicle to ensure Tim is fuelled up and carry his equipment will follow each step of the run, where he aims to complete 65km per day.
“Creature comforts will be few and far between,” said Franklin. “I will be moving for six to 10 hours each day and burning upwards of 6000 calories during that process. Despite it being an individual challenge this will not be done without the help of my team on the ground, across the world as well as in Australia.
“I want Australia to be part of this historic journey and follow my pathway across the world. It has been in the planning for three years and now, just a few weeks out, with visas being approved and arriving and our day-by-day plan coming together – it is starting to feel real -and exciting.”
Tim’s other adventures have included running the equivalent of a marathon around his apartment (2000 laps, over 6.5 hours!) and the equivalent of Everest in the fire escape of his eight storey building (35,000 stairs, 6 hours!).
